CRA Hot Rod Camp 2014 … Building a 1932 Ford Roadster!
July 7, 2014
CRA Family and Friends,
We have now completed our 12th CRA Hot Rod Camp. June 22-28 of this year, seven young men joined with eight CRA Builder/Leaders to accomplish the goal of assembling a '32 Roadster. Once again the camp was held in Mt. Sterling, Ohio at ‘The Rod Shop’ of CRA board members Randy and Judy Scott.
As the boys arrived on Sunday afternoon we begin to watch them. They arrived with skepticism and even possible fear of the “unknown”. However, by the next day friendships had begun to develop and they relaxed and enjoyed the week. I know I say it each time “We had a great bunch of campers” and once again it was true. They were eager to learn in the garage and in the devotions. Our Shop Talk time was great. I can only hope and pray that the boys took away many life lessons that will help their growth. They did learn the work that goes into assembling a car from the frame rail to a driving car in five days and they were great at hands-on. Most importantly they also learned that all of life’s choices can lead you in the right direction or the wrong direction and that God’s Word contains direction for those choices. This is a lesson that will be of most value as they choose direction for their future. We pray that the teens will hold close the lessons, memories, friendships, fellowship and blessings from now on. They came hungry for knowledge, and that fits our mission well! The purpose of the camp is to introduce the boys to the hobby of street rodding, which is a hobby that can be enjoyed by an entire family. Additionally, we want to share Christian values with them that can help them be good husbands, fathers and in general provide them with Scriptures that will guide their lives to be good citizens. We want them to be givers to society and not takers from society. God continues to do a great work in these camps.
Thanks once again to Donavin Calmer for allowing God to birth the vision of these Camps through him. Without him sharing the experience he had as a teenage boy, these Camps may have never become a reality.
Over the last nine years and twelve camps many faces have changed but the mission is still the same, "Building Cars—Changing Lives". This will always be our mission!
Again as with last year the community support in Mt. Sterling, Ohio was a blessing. I want to thank Ben & Joys for all our breakfasts' while we were there; Larry's Pizza for our great pizza evening and the Dairy Freeze for all our lunches they provided as well as their hospitality for our "Ice-cream Cruise" evening. Randy & Judy, thank you for opening your home and Rod Shop to us for the week of the camp. The warmth you extended to all helped make the camp a success.
Rick, Randy, Kevin, Buck, Michael, Tim, and Perry, THANK YOU; you are a great team! Your leadership in the build and most of all, the spiritual message each of you shared in devotionals and "Shop Talk" will rest in the hearts of the campers for years to come. Larry, again, thank you for all you did in helping Kevin and I in the pre-build prep of the '32 for the camp. Also a special thanks to George Kramer for the beautiful paint and artwork on the '32, It’s first class! Ida, Judy, Theresa and Pam, thank you for all the support, prayers and the great food! Thanks also to Jim & Cassie for surprising us Friday by showing up at the camp; your helping hands for a couple days were great. All of you help make the camp special.
Joe, Dagon, Colton, Duncan, Skylar, Andrew and Gavin thank you for making this another CRA Hot Rod Camp that we will never forget. You are a great group of young men and I know God has a blessed plan for your life. As we shared with you, you must follow His guidance in all you do. Always seek out His Word and your life will be much fuller.
A heart-felt thanks to all the vendors that support our camps. Your support helps make a tremendous difference in many lives.
