Following the lead by Caiaphas the High Priest, Pilate condemned Jesus to death and then asked the question, “What is truth?” (John 18:38) If you and I ever lived in a day when the question about truth requires a truthful answer, surely it is today. “What is truth?”
No matter where or who one looks to, the lack of truth is missing in action! While not mentioning the specific issue, consider what is taking place with a number of high position individuals in the TV news industry, either fired or having to step down after being caught in wrongful situations. Several politicians involved in shady deals, not just affecting us in our country but other countries as well. As of yesterday, there is the report of the huge business in Hershey, Pennsylvania that is under fire for discharging those who refused the shot, then being told them must sign a 9-page agreement to “stay silent” not disclosing to the public what has been going on behind the scenes. What is truth?
Jeannie and I recently changed our medical coverage with our primary doctor as we had looked for a Christian doctor. This week, both of us had our first, get acquainted, appointment with the new doctor. I’m confident in saying, like the two of us, you want to feel comfortable that a doctor is telling the truth, no matter any issue that could arise. ‘Take two aspirins and call me in the morning’ doesn’t work if there is anything serious, and while the truth about a problem may hurt in one sense, only truth will ultimately be beneficial in how to address and deal with it.
In Proverbs chapter 12 verse 19, we’re reminded “The truthful lip shall be established forever, but a lying tongue is but for a moment.” While what is not truth may get a person by for the moment, in the end, the lack of truth causes nothing but great harm. However, when we speak the truth God stands behind those words while He also resists those who lie. It’s wise to remember that the devil is like a crooked lawyer watching and listening to your words, looking for any legal loophole that will give him the right to bring stealing, killing, and destruction into your life. The Bible tells us that the words you and I speak steer the course of life, and like the rudder of a ship determines the direction the ship will go, your words…my words…determine the direction life will take. Even words spoken you don’t fully believe, but only express in jest, can still steer another’s life in a completely wrong direction. That’s why Proverbs 18:21 tells us that, “Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit.” That is truth! Prov. 6:2 reads, “You are snared by the words of your mouth; you are taken by the work of your mouth.” That is truth! And Prov. 18:7 is on record telling us, “A fool’s mouth is his destruction, and his lips are the snare of his soul.” That is truth!
When the Green Bay Packers won the Super Bowl in 1997, some thought back to days when Jerry Kramer was with the Packers. Jerry was an offensive lineman who told this story about his time with the Coach. One day during the first year Jerry played for him, Lombardi rode him unmercifully, pointing out how slow he was, how weak he was, how stupid he was. Jerry drug himself into the locker room, feeling he was the worse guard in the league’s history. He sat down in front of his locker, head down, contemplating quitting, when Lombardi came up behind him, mussed up his hair and said, “Son, one of these days you’re going to be the greatest guard in the league.” Suddenly, Kramer felt as though he was 10 feet tall, ready to do anything for coach Lombardi. Jerry went on to be selected as All-Pro five times; also elected to the Wisconsin Athletic Hall of Fame in ’93 and member of the NFL’s 50th Anniversary All-Time team. The tongue has awesome power to whittle some people down to nothing or to turn them into giants capable of doing great and awesome things! That is truth!
I Thes. 5:11 (Msg) “So speak encouraging words to one another. Build up hope so you’ll all be together in this, no one left out, no one left behind. I know you’re already doing this; just keep on doing it.” Now that is truth!
